Alex Southey (Band)
Alex Southey (Band)
at LIVE! on Elgin
with Beams, and Eric Montpool (of Ottawa based Noise Hotel)
Southey's dreamy indie rock lives at the intersection of shoegaze and folk. By fusing these disparate genres together with cerebral, emotionally insightful songwriting he is one of the most authentic and endearing voices in this generation of Canadian indie musicians. Audiences will hear traces of everything from Aimee Mann, to the National, to Mitski, to Radiohead, to Wilco.
Beams is a Toronto-based psychedelic folk band whose sound has evolved through a stylistic progression encompassing aspects of several genres while retaining a strong identity and never chasing trends. Their unique harmonization of female voices, sonically levitating vibraphone, warm purring amps, and shimmering banjo have earned them comparisons to artists ranging from Wilco, Fleetwood Mac and Kate Bush, to Big Thief, Waxahatchee, and Kevin Morby. Throughout their career, they’ve recorded with luminaries such as Peter J. Moore (Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions) and Chicago Post-Rock pioneer John McEntire (Tortoise, Stereolab) and have shared the stage with the Sea & Cake, Widowspeak, The Sadies and Shannon Shaw. Their most recent effort, The Spark In Your Eye, is a three-song EP selected from 13 songs written in lockdown and then recorded live together with Kevin McMahon (Titus Andronicus, Real Estate) at Marcata Recording in the Hudson Valley of New York.
Eric Montpool is a guitarist, singer & songwriter based in Ottawa. Since 2022, Eric has made his mark on the scene as the frontman of Noise Hotel - Ottawa’s favourite velvet-clad indie rockers - and has recently emerged as a solo artist to highlight a different side of his sound. As a solo artist, Eric draws inspiration from his folkie heroes Joni Mitchell & Gordon Lightfoot, singing heartfelt acoustic songs, but still retains his rock roots when playing upbeat and electrified jams with his bandmates. Whether you’re seeing home on the stage with Noise Hotel, playing guitar for Ottawa acts like Hannah Vig, or on his acoustic guitar at a solo set, Eric Montpool is sure to entertain.
